Tips for reducing costs through smart design and efficient use of materials
Laser cutting is a fast and precise method of making parts from different materials, but the final price of the order often depends on a number of factors related to the design. In this article, we are going to share some useful tips that you can use to reduce your costs without compromising on quality.
1. Minimize the length of cut
- Avoid overly complex contours and decorative elements.
- Group elements so that they have common walls (so-called "common line cutting").
- Opt for geometrically simplified shapes whenever possible.
2. Optimal placement of details in the sheet (nesting)

- Arrange the details tightly next to each other, without unnecessary distances.
- Use automatic nesting features in your software or upload a properly prepared file to the LaserMaster calculator.
- Avoid waste from non-standard or oversized shapes.
3. Avoid too small openings and narrow gaps
- Adhere to the minimum process limits for the material (typically 1–1.5x the thickness of the material).
- Make sure the holes and channels are large enough to be cut correctly.
4. Combine cutting and engraving only when necessary
- Use engraving sparingly – only for logos, lettering or orientation lines.
- Avoid dense fills, especially on large surfaces.
5. Match the design to the thickness and type of material
- Thinner materials are cut faster and cheaper.
- Choose the right material according to the strength, flexibility and aesthetics you are looking for.
6. Use LaserMaster's built-in online calculator
The LaserMaster system automatically calculates the price based on material, thickness, time and length of cut. Try different options to find the optimal combination.
Design optimization is the key to lower costs and a more efficient manufacturing process. If you follow these tips, you'll reduce the cost of your project, shorten the lead time, and get better results.
