Production of bent details from sheet metal

Abcant bending process

For the production of bent parts, a bending machine or the so-called abcant is used. Abcant has an upper and lower instrument. The upper tool (knife) is pressed into the lower tool (prism).

The sheet is placed between the two tools. The knife descends with a certain pressing force and presses the sheet metal against the prism. The prism works with the same pushing force, but in the opposite direction. In this way, the sheet metal is bent into the desired shape.

The required prism is selected and placed depending on the specific bending radius.

The footprint when bending

When bending workpieces with an abcant, bending prisms can leave edge impressions on the surface of the workpiece. In addition, in contact with sheet metal, small scratches, grooves and dents can be caused by the impact of the knife. In such situations, a silicone band is applied, which can prevent these small flaws. Therefore, the application of a flexible silicone tape is recommended, especially for details that must meet high visual requirements.

Rolling direction when folding sheet metal

In the production of sheet metal parts, so-called plates - large rolls of raw material - are cast from various metals such as copper, steel, stainless steel or aluminum. They are then processed into sheets by rolling. The metal is stretched and a structure of fibrous material is created.

Rolling direction when folding sheet metal

Fiber orientation always depends on the rolling direction. Since the material is stronger in the direction of rolling, and for this reason, the direction of rolling is a factor to be considered for the quality of the bent parts.
